As far as critiques go, don't spare my feelings. Be brutal. I'm putting this in my demo reel, and I want it to be the best it can be.

It doesnt look finished and keep the acting subtle, its too loud, because of the loudness its loosing in the impact, and also action is not registering properly, staging is not proper.Dont put suggestive acting it looks obvious, check the arm bending (both the arm). Important part is always let audience understand the scene. You can start with some thing like one hand(Left) is on the backside of the character and another on his forehead (right). Like he is trying to get angry but could not able to cause dialogue is also not that much of furious nature. Dont move both the arm at a time. Start with little head movement and then jump to the dialogue part, let the audience read the lips and facial movement. Keep the character to bit left and get a silhouette pose then block all the key poses. Change the action and start from minimum. If you are going to do it again post from planing so that you can visualize it. Refer movement before jumping in to animation. You can film your self and record the times of arm movement and head movement before putting principle into your animation. Hope not telling you some thing useless. Sorry If I did so.

Hey,

What I really noticed was that the hips are not moving, even if you have animated from the hips up you still need to move it. Try standing up and acting without moving you hips even so slightly. It feels kinda odd don't you think?

Also, I noticed a pop in the hip controller when he straightens up, you might have to go in the graph editor and have a look at what is causing it, probably just a over extended tangent.

Also you could basically tone it down a bit, in a short piece of animation you would have two major keys and then just have really subtle keys flowing into them.

I agree with many of the previous comments, however I personally like the 'over-the-top' acting choices.

I like how bold he is in his movements.

You do need to move the hips, and also his head and upper torso feel a little weightless.

Again, look at some of the human reference footage of weight shifting:
animationsalvation.com/free_tips/reference

The hips really need to shift in order to compensate for him throwing his head and upper body around like that.

Also, as a bit of 'Secondary Action' I would have him readjust his glasses right before he says "do that again". As if they fell down his nose a bit when he lunges forward.

I like the head gesture at the end. It's got personality, just try and polish some of the 12 Principles a bit more.

Your farther along than me..

I like the characterization!.. You can tell that he means what he says by looking down his nose and making sure the offscreen character is getting the message!

What I notice is that the holds.. where the character says "Ever" for instance are so long that the animation becomes too static. We are always in some form of motion.. even when you are trying to be still for emphasis in a conversation. 2cnts

Good luck,
Gary

DJ,

I'm not sure why, but I can't access the video files on your reference site. I keep getting an internet error, and then it takes the page straight to "Cannot Display The Webpage."

Is anyone else having this problem? Is it because I'm using Internet Explorer, maybe?

Hey Keyfish, I to am having the same probelm with accessing the reference on the site.
Liking your piece thus far, asides from the lack of weight shifting going on, I think this piece could really use some more animation and posing with those hands. They are feeling pretty "rake" like at the moment, and seem to stay that way for the duration of the piece. I'd love to see him make a fist or do something with those hands to show the annoyance hes just experienced by the person hes asking to never do whatever they just did again.
You have some wierd pops going on there at the end in the head, which is kinda cool in a wierd way with the head. However the shoulders do that poppy thing as well, you bring them both up and down, Id love to see the shoulders when they go up to stay up, when we get frustrated and aggitated we tend to tighten up those shoulder muscles, and I think that would add a nice touch as well.
good luck with finishing the piece off.

Edit - the links seem to take me to an error page, and I can neither download or watch them dj.

DJ, just watching them. I haven't tried to download anything because the original files won't play. On the main page of your reference site, I just click on the link and get an error message. I've also gotten that same message on your Animating Dances tutorial.

And everyone, I want to thank you for all your wonderful feedback. I'll definitely be playing with this a lot more. Thank you guys so much.

Hmm, I'm not sure why the reference is not showing up for you.

I am using Firefox, and they all play just fine. I know that Vimeo was giving me troubles, but you're both saying that the links take you to an error page as opposed to the video not playing.

Can you please tell me what video's specifically? I need to know if it is a WordPress error, or if it is Vimeo.

Also, I don't mean to steal the thunder from your animation critique Chelsey, so if you cna just write on my wall instead of in here. Thanks!
